It is a poetic rumination about the nature of memories, our individual and communal experiences with our histories and healing transgenerational trauma. I was wrong, of course, and my friend did manage to undersell the book just enough for it to surprise me. A friend of mine had told me that The Deep was more about memory and history, but still with the image of that mockumentary in my head, I somehow thought it would have been something else, a deep-sea adventure story involving mermaids and whales. When I saw the cover of The Deep by Rivers Solomon, my mind immediately bounced back to the 2013 Animal Planet docufiction Mermaids: The Body Found.

“I am in a wonderful marriage,” Gay tells me. It is mid-morning in New York and Gay, 48, is drinking a takeaway cup of coffee in the eaves of the brownstone house she shares with her wife Debbie Millman. And, in many areas, such as reproductive freedom, we have lost ground, which is a bitter pill to swallow.” Most of the issues I wrote about are sadly just as relevant today. When I coined it, it was partly serious and partly tongue in cheek: if good feminism is the feminism that overlooks the intersections of identity that we all inhabit, then I’d rather be a bad feminist. So, nine years on, does the writer, editor, professor, podcaster, cultural critic, and Gloria Steinem Endowed Chair in Media, Culture and Feminist Studies at Rutgers University, New Jersey, still consider herself a bad feminist? “I think I’m a better feminist now than I was,” says Gay when we meet on Zoom. Book Synopsis NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK - Sharply, evocatively written and elaborately plotted. Chance, Dane and Knox, the main sharks, hate her all for different reasons. Ava hates the Sharks, also known as the popular boys that rule the school, because she suspects that one of them was the one that raped her a year before. And that’s where this book fell flat for me. Ava has her reasons but to me Knox’s reason as to why he disliked Ava was boring. We follow our two main characters Knox Grayson and Ava Harris, two high school seniors who can’t stand one another. I should start off by saying this book was honestly not what I expected. I’ve missed you cheering at my football games.Īnd then everything fell apart the night of the kegger. I’ve missed seeing you walk down the hall. It’s been ten months since you were here, but I can’t forget you. What I really mean is, you look at me and I feel something REAL. Your eyes are the color of the Caribbean Sea. The question is, which Shark is my secret admirer? Please. I hate every one of those rich jerks for what they did to me. The last thing I expected was an anonymous love letter from one of them. Once upon a time, I wanted to be part of their world–until they destroyed me. The rich and popular Sharks rule at prestigious, ivy-covered Camden Prep. The descriptions of the Belasco mansion as the characters first enter sets an ominous vibe, feeling heavy and watched. I enjoyed the spooky atmosphere and startling visuals. Each character has a different perspective on why the house is “haunted,” from scientific to paranormal. The atmosphere of the novel worked for me but the characters did not. However, I just read The Exorcist, also written in the 70s, and I felt that lived up to every bit of my expectations. Granted this book was written in the 70s so by the standards of the day it was ridiculously horrific and controversial. I think the praise actually worked against it because I felt a little let down. I was so excited to start reading Hell House because of its rave reviews and reputation for being the scariest haunted house novel. For one night, Barrett and his colleagues investigate the Belasco House and learn exactly why the townsfolk refer to it as the Hell House. Lionel Barrett, the physicist, accompanied by the mediums, travel to the Belasco House in Maine, which has been abandoned and sealed since 1949 after a decade of drug addiction, alcoholism, and debauchery. But when Deutsch, a wealthy magazine and newspaper publisher, starts thinking seriously about his impending death, he offers to pay a physicist and two mediums, one physical and one mental, $100,000 each to establish the facts of life after death.ĭr.
